CIBC Halifax contact centre layoffs have blindsided workers at one of the bank’s busiest customer service hubs and according to employees, this may only be the beginning.
What happened at CIBC’s Halifax contact centre?
Workers at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) contact centre in Halifax received layoff notices last week, with affected employees called into one-on-one meetings to learn their roles were being eliminated. For many, the news landed without warning. One employee who spoke to The Chronicle Herald on condition of anonymity described the atmosphere plainly: “We were completely caught off guard when the news began breaking to individuals last week, and this is just the first group of layoffs.”
The employee, who had worked in telephone banking at CIBC for a decade, said the shock was widespread. “It genuinely came as a shock to everyone involved.”
How many workers are affected at CIBC’s contact centres?
CIBC’s contact centres employ approximately 3,000 people across Canada, with between 400 and 500 of those positions based in Halifax, some performed remotely. The scale of the current round of cuts has not been officially confirmed by the bank, but the anonymous employee’s warning that this is “just the first group” suggests the Halifax notices may be one part of a broader, ongoing restructuring.
What reason did CIBC give for the layoffs?
Management offered little explanation beyond the official line. Affected employees were told their roles were being eliminated due to business restructuring, with questions from staff going largely unanswered. Workers were instead directed to review their severance information packages.
In a statement, a CIBC spokesperson said: “Positioning our workforce in support of our client-focused growth strategy is a priority for our bank year-round, and as we efficiently allocate resources where team members are most needed, there can be some changes affecting roles. When there are changes, we are committed to redeploying team members where possible and supporting them through the transition.”
What severance are affected CIBC employees receiving?
Laid-off workers will receive severance based on years of service, according to the employee who spoke to The Chronicle Herald. Beyond that, the bank has pointed employees to their severance packages rather than fielding direct questions, a communication approach that has added to the frustration felt by those affected.
What is the mood like among remaining CIBC contact centre staff?
For those who kept their jobs, the relief is tempered by anxiety. The employee who spoke out described staff morale as being at an all-time low, with colleagues worried they could be next. The human cost of the uncertainty is real, single parents, workers living paycheque to paycheque, and long-tenured employees who built careers at the bank are among those now navigating an abrupt and stressful transition.
“I’ll be OK myself, but I do worry about my wonderful co-workers, especially single parents and those living paycheque to paycheque. For many of them, this was their livelihood,” the employee said.
Are you a CIBC employee in Ontario affected by layoffs?
If you have received a layoff notice from CIBC or any financial institution undergoing restructuring, you need to understand your full legal entitlements before signing any severance agreement. What a bank offers in a severance package is not always what Canada’s Labour Code requires them to provide, and the difference can be significant.
Severance based on years of service is a starting point, not a ceiling. Depending on your length of employment, role, and the terms of your employment contract, you may be entitled to considerably more than what’s in that package.
The employment lawyers at Whitten & Lublin have extensive experience representing employees navigating terminations at major financial institutions. We can help you understand what you’re owed, whether the release you’ve been asked to sign is reasonable, and what your next steps should be.
