Neo Financial lays off roughly 10 percent of its staff and the decision reveals that one of Canada’s most closely watched fintech companies is hitting the reset button on how it operates.
What exactly happened at Neo Financial?
Calgary-based fintech Neo Financial has eliminated 102 roles, affecting employees across nearly every part of the company. The announcement came Tuesday morning via a LinkedIn post from co-founder and CEO Andrew Chau, notably, a verbatim copy of the internal memo already shared with remaining staff. Co-founder and chief commercial officer Jeff Adamson confirmed to BetaKit that the same message went to the entire company, a transparency move that stood out against the opaquer communication styles typical of corporate restructurings.
Why is Neo Financial cutting jobs now?
According to leadership, the culprit is complexity, not over hiring, and not AI-driven automation. Adamson was direct about it: Neo had been “building too many things at once,” which spread teams thin and slowed the company down. The solution, in their view, is a smaller, more focused organisation concentrated on its core products: daily banking, credit, savings, and the path to homeownership.
“A smaller, more streamlined team on a singular company focus is how we get clearer and faster with less parallel work,” Adamson said.
Which departments and locations were hit the hardest?
Neo has not specified which departments absorbed the largest share of cuts, nor has it confirmed whether its Calgary, Toronto, or Winnipeg offices were disproportionately affected. What leadership did confirm is that the reductions touched nearly every part of the company, meaning no single team or location appears to have been spared entirely.
Were employees caught off guard?
For many, the news came without warning. Sergio Schüler, who worked as a group product manager for financial crime, said he received a meeting invite from the CHRO and COO at around 10 a.m. Tuesday with no prior indication his role was at risk. The surprise was compounded by the fact that he had received an internal company award just months earlier.
Schüler’s situation carries an added layer of complexity: he was hired as a temporary foreign worker, meaning his work visa was employer-specific. His job search now involves navigating immigration constraints that most laid-off employees don’t face. Federal records show Neo issued positive labour market impact assessments (LMIAs) allowing it to hire seven temporary foreign workers in the first half of this year, and 26 in 2024. BetaKit has asked Neo how many TFWs were among those let go.
What severance and support is Neo offering affected employees?
Neo has confirmed that laid-off employees will receive severance pay, extended benefits coverage, and a waived equity cliff. The company has also offered career transition support for those who want it, a package that goes somewhat beyond the minimum many employers provide during restructurings of this scale.
Has Neo Financial gone through layoffs before?
This is not the first time Neo’s workforce decisions have drawn public attention. In 2024, the Winnipeg Free Press published an investigation into allegations of unexplained layoffs at the company, particularly significant given that Neo had hired for hundreds of positions in Winnipeg as part of a provincially backed job-creation program. The province subsequently reduced Neo’s job-creation funding.
Were you affected by Neo Financials’ layoffs in Canada?
If you received a termination notice from Neo Financial or any employer going through a restructuring, it’s important to understand what you’re actually entitled to before signing any severance paperwork. What an employer offers upfront is not always what the law requires them to provide.
The employment lawyers at Whitten & Lublin regularly help Ontario employees navigate terminations during large-scale corporate changes, including questions around severance entitlements, temporary foreign worker status, and the enforceability of releases.
